Proper Ear Care for Better Hearing

You need your ears to hear well, and your sense of hearing is a very important sense, as you need it to participate in every aspect of life. Taking good care of your ears is a worthy investment, and it’s better not to wait until you develop problems before you give your ears the attention they deserve.

What could go wrong with your ears? There are a variety of issues that can develop, such as infection, cysts, hearing loss, and eardrum perforation. Let’s talk about how you can care for your ears for better hearing.

#1 Avoid Exposure To Loud Noises

If you are in a noisy environment, you may want to wear earplugs. Loud environments include concerts, construction sites, and noisy bars/restaurants. Whether you are there for entertainment or due to your occupation, take steps to protect your ears. Try to keep a safe distance from loudspeakers. If you do expose your ears to extremely loud noise, give them time to recover. The telltale ringing in the ears (tinnitus) indicates damage.

#2 Turn Down The Volume On Headphones

If you like listening to music on headphones, be careful. Turn down the volume to low – no more than 70 percent of the full volume – and limit the amount of time you spend listening to music on in-ear or over-ear audio electronic devices. If someone else can hear what music you are listening to, then you probably have the volume on too loud.

#3 Be Careful When Cleaning Your Ears

Your ears are self-cleaning, so there is no need for you to clean them. If you like to clean the outer part of your eardrum, you can do so with a washcloth. Using Q-tips only pushes the earwax deeper in the ear canal, which can cause pain and hearing loss, and may require the removal of built-up earwax by a healthcare professional.

#4 Get Your Hearing Tested Regularly

Hearing tests are like health screenings – and they are not just for the elderly. Hearing loss can affect adults as young as 40 years of age, while many people over the age of 60 have some degree of hearing loss. Hearing tests are noninvasive and painless, and are over in just 30 minutes or less. Through a hearing test, you can learn a lot about whether or not you have hearing loss. It empowers you to make decisions about your health care and receive treatment to delay the progression of hearing loss and prevent damage to your ears.
