When your child is dealing with miserable allergies that are not responding to over-the-counter medications, it’s time to see an experienced allergist. Taking prescription allergy medicine, using an inhaler, and/or taking preventive steps to avoid allergens can help your child not only enjoy life fully, but also prevent a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Let’s talk about how an allergist can help your child keep their allergies under control, and where you can go here in Georgetown to see a doctor who can treat your child’s allergy efficiently and effectively.

An Allergist Can Treat Allergic Reactions and Asthma

An allergist is specially trained to identify the triggers of your child’s allergies and to provide treatment as necessary. Many people experience asthma as a side-effect of an allergic reaction.

Some of the most common allergic conditions include the following:

  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Asthma
  • Eczema
  • Hives
  • Chronic cough
  • Food allergy
  • Medication allergy
  • Venom allergy
  • Latex allergy

An Allergy Doctor Can Conduct an Evaluation of Your Child’s Allergies

To conduct an evaluation, your allergist will first ask some questions about your child, covering topics like:

  • Symptoms
  • Frequency and severity of the symptoms
  • Diet
  • Home and school environment

The allergist will then conduct a physical examination of your child. The doctor may also perform certain allergy tests, including one or more of the following:

  • Skin prick test
  • Blood test
  • Patch test
  • Skin-injection test

The doctor may also recommend that you try an elimination diet. You will likely be asked to help your child by participating in the diet (temporarily) as well. This is an attempt to determine any food triggers of your child’s allergies.

Your allergist will provide a list of what food items your child should avoid, and what reactions to look for. You may also ask the doctor about healthy food substitutes you can give to your child.

Your child’s allergy doctor will try to determine the allergic trigger by having you and the child notice any flare-ups or alleviation of the allergic symptoms when changing the eating habits.

Allergists Provide Medical Advice and Treatment

Once your child’s allergy triggers are determined, the allergy doctor will explain how best to avoid exposure to those triggers – and how to address it if the child is ever exposed to the trigger and thereby experiences an allergic reaction. This may include prescription medication, including one or more of the following:

  • Antihistamines (in oral preparations or steroid creams)
  • Decongestants (nasal sprays)
  • Corticosteroids (inhalers)
